One of the distinctive sounds of a Muslim country like Tunisia is the call to prayer from the mosque. The sound wails out from the minarets five times a day, the first at dawn. This call is the adhan and is made by the muezzin, an official of the mosque. He is actually saying things like ‘Allah is most great’, ‘Come to prayer’, ‘come to salvation’ and ‘There is no god besides Allah’. The more devout Muslims will stop what they are doing and pray at the appointed times, so be prepared to see this sometimes in shops or other public places. Some shop owners briefly close to enable them to say their prayers. Mosques are generally closed to non-Muslims, but some open their courtyards to the public though you may not be allowed to go any further than this.
