Thuburbo Majus

All Roman remains in Tunisia pale into insignificance once you have seen Dougga, but the remnants of this Roman city near modern-day El-Fahs are still worth visiting. What you can see today mainly dates back to the 2nd century AD, although there has been a settlement on this site since at least the 5th century BC. It owes its importance to the produce grown in the area, mainly olives, grapes and grain. The most impressive ruins are those of the Capitol, raised above the city, but other interesting remains are of the two public baths (summer and winter ones), the shops around the market place, mosaics in some well-to-do houses and the Temple of Mercury.
